Crosshouse Hospital and Kilmarnock Town Centre

Like everyone, I was horrified by the events of last night. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the bereaved during this extremely difficult time.

I'd also like to pay tribute to our excellent emergency services for their actions and bravery. They are already working extremely hard to ensure our safety at this time and we cannot thank them enough.

There is a police presence at Crosshoue Hospital, however, the hospital is still operational and continuing to take patients after being put into a three-hour lockdown last night.

However, due to the ongoing investigation, the following roads remain closed but diversions are in place; West George Street, Portland Street, Garden Street via Hill Street to Portland Street, Union Street and U723 to C50 Brackenhill.

Although there are no wider safety concerns, I still ask people to look out for one another.

Press Release: Universal Credit Uplift Payment

Alan Brown MP pleads with Government over welfare cuts.

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun has asked the UK Government to not follow through on the proposed £20 cut to the universal credit uplift.

Last week, members voted in favour of keeping the uplift payment after the Tories abstained on the motion tabled by the opposition. However, there are no guarantees this will be honoured by the Government.

This week, Mr Brown raised the topic in the House with Therese Coffey. He asked the Secretary of State for the Department and Work and Pensions what discussions she had with the Chancellor about keeping the payment.

He said:

“Child poverty is a disgrace in the UK and it is strongly linked to welfare payments. Quite clearly, more people are going to be pushed into poverty if the Tory Government continue with their planned cut to the £20 uplift in universal credit and the working tax credit.

“Ministers have ducked this all day, but given that the Government did not vote against the motion last week, they have a duty to honour that motion, so will the Secretary of State confirm what discussions she has had with the Chancellor about retaining the vital £20 uplift?”

However, Dr Coffey made no further pledges as she responded:

“I updated the House in November and did say that we would be reviewing this in the new year. That is exactly what we are doing, and I am actively considering with the Chancellor the best way to continue to try to support people who are impacted on strongly by the economic impacts of this pandemic.”

Commenting, the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

“Although disappointed, I am not surprised. The Tories aren’t ruling anything out or giving any faith they are going to keep it.

“This is not party politics; it’s about doing what’s right. They have to keep the uplift payment otherwise we will see more and more pushed into poverty, it’s as simple as that.

“Many of my constituents will be affected by this as we have seen first-hand the shameful effects of welfare cuts. I have been contacted by a number of constituents on the issue who pleaded with me not to vote in favour of the cuts.

“I have repeatedly called on the UK Government to make the £20 increase to Universal Credit and Working Tax Credits permanent and to extend an equivalent uplift to people claiming legacy benefits who have so far been left out of additional support.

“The UK Government’s reassurance that the £20 uplift will stay in place until ‘at least’ April 2021 is simply not good enough; people need confirmation that it will be made permanent.

“People are now facing a cliff edge in April because the UK Government has failed to act and as usual has let this issue run on into the eleventh hour.”

Press Release: MP calls for travel and aviation support package

ALAN BROWN MP BACKS CALL FOR COMPREHENSIVE RECOVERY PACKAGE FOR AVIATION, TRAVEL AND TOURISM

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun has today joined over 80 parliamentarians in calling for greater support for the aviation, travel and tourism industries following the recent closure of all travel corridors.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Future of Aviation, Mr Brown has acknowledged that the latest restrictions were a necessary measure to protect the UK public from the spread of new variants of COVID-19 but highlight that these industries need urgent support to recover from the devastating impacts of the pandemic.

He has joined calls for a comprehensive ‘Aviation, Travel and Tourism Recovery Package’ to provide immediate financial and additional support alongside a pathway to allow aviation to come out of these restrictions when safe to do so.

Commenting the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

“The closure of all travel corridors is a necessary measure to protect the public from new variants of COVID-19 but will be another significant blow to industries which have faced the pandemic without the same levels of support afforded to other sectors.

“Our aviation, travel and tourism industries have been amongst the hardest hit by the pandemic sadly leading to job losses and leaving our world class aviation industry a shadow of its former self. I have been contacted by several constituents on the matter and I will continue to do all I can to support them during this time.

“These businesses are vital not only to our local economy, but also to our ability to bounce back from the devastating impacts of the pandemic. It is vital that the Government listen our call to support and protect the businesses, their supply chains, employees, and communities who have borne the brunt of the near total collapse of UK passenger numbers.

“Our aviation, travel and tourism sectors are running on empty and I urge the Prime Minster to back these vital industries and deliver the support they so desperately need and deliver it now.”
